Is tantra the same as sexuality?

← All articles

Sexuality can be an important part of tantra, but the practice also reaches into awareness, relationships and everyday life. For me, it is a path of self-discovery, with sexuality as one possible area of exploration.

Modern Western tantra often gives sexuality considerable attention. That helps explain why the two are so closely associated.

Familiar touch, a different experience

Some tantric massages can include intimate touch if you choose it. People are often surprised by how different that feels from previous experiences.

Intention, pace and attention all shape touch. A hand that takes its time, without expecting a response or working towards a climax, may feel unfamiliar. Your own expectations and curiosity also influence what you notice.

Exploring through the senses

A massage offers a way to explore sensation: warmth, pleasure, emotion, stillness or sexual energy. Private sessions and workshops may also explore self-image, beliefs and familiar patterns.

What have you learned about your body? Which beliefs about sexuality still fit? When do you adapt to someone else, and when do you express what you want?

Why sexuality can reveal so much

Desire and uncertainty can exist together. You can enjoy a sensation and still want to slow down. You can be attracted to someone and not want a particular kind of contact.

Exploring these distinctions can help you understand your wishes and boundaries, remain present with pleasure and communicate more clearly.

Arousal, desire and consent

A physical response does not automatically tell you what you want. Arousal can occur without a wish for sexual contact. You can feel desire and choose not to act on it. You can also want intimacy while noticing little physical response.

Arousal is a bodily response. Desire is an experience. Consent is a choice. They may occur together, but none should be assumed from another.

Something can feel pleasant without needing to go further.

Sexual energy can remain an experience

Within tantra, sexual energy is understood as part of life energy. You may notice warmth, pleasure or vitality without needing to turn it into a sexual act.

For some people, that freedom from an expected next step changes how receiving touch feels.

Sensuality and sexuality

Sensuality concerns the senses and the capacity to enjoy sensation. Sexuality adds a sexual meaning or context. A touch can therefore feel sensual without feeling sexual to you.

The patterns you notice in intimacy may also appear elsewhere: difficulty receiving, putting others first, holding back a wish or hesitating to express a boundary. Tantra offers ways to explore these patterns across your life.

Common questions

Is tantra only for improving your sex life?

No. People also come to explore presence, body awareness, relationships and self-understanding.

Does sexuality have to be included?

No. You can choose an approach in which sexuality plays no part.

Is sexual energy the same as arousal?

In tantric language, arousal is one possible expression of sexual energy. The term is also used more broadly for vitality, warmth or creativity.

Can tantra treat sexual difficulties?

Tantra is not a treatment. For physical or sexual concerns, your GP or a qualified sexologist is the appropriate first contact. Alongside suitable care, tantra may offer a way to explore sensation and receiving.
